“So typical of Asian parents, they wanted me to become a successful doctor. So typical of me, I was disappointing them.
Dad searched through my room and found my latest chemistry exam mark.
He flipped. I was lectured all night. “Only 93%, what happened to the other 7%?”
As always I didn’t speak, I just took the blame for being to lazy and betraying my family and ancestors. Dad got angry.
He picked up a pair of scissors and threw them at me, leaving a cut just below the eye. Mum said it was my fault, I shouldn’t have been doing craft. I ended up just sitting in my room crying. I could never please my parents, nothing I did seemed ever good enough. They always wanted more, and withheld their love to get it. I had no money of my own and wasn’t allowed a part time job. I asked Centrelink about getting some, but they said my parents earned too much for them to help. I was meant to ask Dad.
What and risk getting him angry? It was easier to steal.
That’s how it started. I got caught. Dad was so ashamed of me, he didn’t let me back home. The school told me about Hero International.
I sent them an email. Then she came, like an angel. She arranged for me a safe place to sleep at their Hero home and paid for my emergency expenses. She even sorted out my legal problems and met with my parents. Now thanks to Hero, I am living back home. Their ongoing mentoring has helped me find the right solution to my parent and my money problem. Dad even gets angry with me less now. I no longer need to steal and I am on my way to becoming a hero helping others at my school.”
